Born in Argentina , Bartolomeo Silva Saldanha, known as Bartolo or Barto, was an early pioneer in the mariner's compass. He moved to Portugal when he was a young man and became a chief pilot in the Portuguese Navy. He is said to have been a pirate when he was young, but grew wealthy enough in the 17th century to buy a ship and crew for himself. He attacked ships he considered were not piratical enough and went for treasure rather than for plunder. He later became a privateer working for the Portuguese crown who was assigned to Mexico. His patron, Don Pedro de Toledo, was responsible for making the hire. Bartolo gave his brother Agostino the task of building a galleon, which he completed in 1748. The ship under Bartolo's command was captained by Captain Martin Alferez, who had attended navigational school in Lisbon run by Bartolo himself. The ship ordered by Agostino and Bartolo was to be carrying gold and silver from Veracruz on its way to Portugal when it became wrecked near Sable Island between Canada and Nova Scotia . cfa1e77820
