Fashioning himself a thief, Flynn steals the crown of the Lost Lands' evil queen, Mother Gothel's magic tear-drop necklace (a powerful magical artifact which gives its wearer complete control over any living thing in its radius), and sets off to return to the Lost Lands with his new friends Cassandra, Maximus, and Pascal. Mother Gothel discovers that Flynn has left her, so she searches for him in order to retrieve him. The plot of "Tangled" is semi-based on the German fairy tale "Rapunzel" in the collection of folktales published in 1812 by the Brothers Grimm. In the original story, the princess Rapunzel has her long hair cut off by an old witch and is magically bound to a tower in the forest where she is kept locked away from the world. Flynn's relationship with her is a major part of "Tangled" and his desire to be reunited with her is a driving force for his character development. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised its animation, music, humor and voice acting (particularly that of Meryl Streep), but some critics felt that it lacked the originality of Disney's previous animated films. It became Disney's first animated film released theatrically in 3D; however, it was filmed using traditional 2D animation techniques. The film was a box office success, grossing over $590 million worldwide. The film received nominations for Best Original Song at the 68th Golden Globe Awards for "I See the Light", which lost to "We Belong Together" from Toy Story 3, and Best Animated Feature Film at the 64th British Academy Film Awards where it lost to Pixar's Up. Also, Disney's decision to change the ending of Rapunzel's story from the ending of the original fairy tale resulted in a mixed response from critics and audiences. The film starts on a market day on the Isle of the Lost, where Flynn Ryder and his mother meet the newly appointed mayor, Maximus. While they wait for Flynn's tutor to appear, Mother Gothel, disguised as a baker lady introduces herself to Flynn and promises him that if he can steal her magical necklace (which makes people obey her orders) he will be allowed to escape the kingdom.
